Books

CMS has published a book; Migration and Mobility in Ghana: Trends, Issues and Emerging Research Gaps". The book was published from the research undertaken as part of the "African Perspective on Human Mobility Programme" coordinated by the International Migration Institute (IMI), Oxford University.

This book provides an account of the evolution of migration and highlights the trends and dynamics by providing a situational analysis of the socio-economic environment and the historical context for migration in Ghana.

About the book

Migration is an enduring theme of human history and is considered one of the defining global issues of the twenty-first century. In Ghana, as other parts of Africa, migration is largely informal and undocumented, making accurate data on the phenomenon extremely scanty. Over the last two decades, new migration dynamics have emerged in Ghana with globalization, shift in the global political economy as well as from the economic political stabilization of the country. Until recently however, information and data on these changing trends and dynamics have largely been scarce. This book provides an account of the evolution of migration in Ghana and highlights the changing trends and dynamics by providing a situational analysis of the socio-economic environment and an historical context for migration in Ghana. It also discusses the different trajectories of migration research and the changing causes and drivers of migration in Ghana. Key gaps and unanswered questions in Ghanaian migration research were identified and emerging areas that may be considered for future research such as migrants labour and the potential of the nascen petro-chemical industry for changing and accentuating migration dynamics in Ghana. This book also makes a case for a comprehensive national migration policy to provide direction for the management of migration in the country.

The book is authored by Mariama Awumbila, Takyiwaa Manuh, Peter Quartey, Thoma Antwi Bosiakoh and Cynthia Addoquaye Tagoe
